 | Biography/Personal Statement
Hi I'm Joe and I can definitely say today that I
am an alcoholic. I started drinking and drugging at the age of 16.
Graduated High School and became an everyday affair addict, using both
alcohol and drugs. I went to my first A. A. meeting with my mother
because she had a problem with alcohol and pain medication due to her
health problems.
In 96 I heard that the program of Alcoholics Anonymous "works if
you work it" but I thought Id find a way to control the disease
myself. For that reason and for other wrong reasons such as going to
please my parents and everyone around me, it didn't work for me.
As the years passed by in and out of the rooms of A.A. my disease
progressed to the point that I ended up running and living on the
streets of Trenton, in New Jersey. I visited the Alan Club on Cass
Street and begged somebody to take me to a rehab facility, I ended up
at The Salvation Army. Due to my fears and hopelessness I spent 8
months here and grew in a willingness to change every day. After
meeting with Gez at the Alan Club I made the transition to Tabor
House. At the time of writing I have managed to stay sober for 10
months now, I am grateful for this house and by the grace of God and
the examples of the people I live with I am able to remain sober on a
daily basis.
